ALL ABOUT PIPES

In a building different types of plumbing pipes are used for various purposes, which may include water supply, drainage, waste disposal, and much more.  Water is a basic necessity at any building and a sufficient quantity of water is required to meet the various needs of the occupants. The transmission of water is carried through pipes with the structure above or below the ground. Therefore the needed infrastructure must be properly computed before the construction of the structure. The drainage factor is equally important and plays a significant role. There must be conventional computation of the drainage facilities to drain out the water.  The plumbing system comprises the whole system pipe fittings and appliances used for water supply and drainage.

Pipes which are leading from the distribution main of the water supply to the plumbing system of the building are known as the service pipes. The principal type of pipes that are available for the piping systems are:

·       Plastic or PVC pipes

·       Cast iron pipes and fittings

·       Stoneware pipes

·       Galvanized steel pipes

·       Asbestos cement [AC] pipes

·       Concrete pipes

1. PLASTIC OR PVC PIPES

PVC pipes or POLYVINYL CHLORIDE pipes are lightweight but strong. There are 3 common types of plastic pipes available in the market.

·       Unplasticized PVC [UPVC] or rigid pipes for use with cold water.

·       Plasticized PVC pipes are plasticized with the addition of rubber. It has lower strength and lower working temperature than UPVC pipes.

·       Chlorinated  PVC [CPVC] pipes can withstand higher temperatures up to 42 degrees and are generally used to carry hot water.

Rigid PVC pipes are used for the distribution of water with a temperature higher than 45 degrees. PVCs are used in the transportation of fluids from one location to another.

BENEFITS

·       They are corrosion-resistant.

·       They are economic and budget-friendly.

·       They are light weighted.

·       Easy to install.

·       Do not require threading.

·       They are resistant  to bacterial activities.

2. CAST IRON PIPES AND FITTINGS

Cast iron pipes and fittings are primarily used for designing spoil and rainwater disposal systems.  These pipes are made by the sand cast process or spinning.  Sand-cast pipes are made by pouring molten cast iron into vertically mounted sand molds. They are available in different sizes and thicknesses. Spun pipes are made by pouring molten grey cast iron into revolving water-cooled mold.

3. STONEWARE PIPES

Stoneware pipes are used for underground pipelines for the disposal of rainwater and drainage systems in low-cost construction buildings. They are lower priced compared to plastic pipes.  Usually, these pipes are laid on an even bed of concrete and further treated as specified for laying on different soils. These pipes are available in the form of internal diameters 10mm to 600mm with thickness varying from 12mm to 43mm.

4. GALVANIZED STEEL PIPES

Galvanized pipes, coated with zinc, are very strong and durable and are hence used for large constructions.  GI pipes are made of steel and are galvanized by depositing a thin layer of zinc which protects them from corrosion.  They are available in light, medium, and heavy grades depending on the thickness of the metal. These pipes corrode easily if it carries brackish water or concealed in lime or buried under the ground. They are costlier than PVC pipes.

5. ASBESTOS CEMENT PIPES

Asbestos cement pipes are made up of asbestos fiber added with cement to make them strong. These pipes are used for drainage of rainwater from roofs, soil, and waste and also for ventilation. They come in two profiles - one with beading around the socket[WB] and the other without beading around the socket [WOB]. The pipes come in lengths of 3 meters.

6. CONCRETE PIPES

Concrete pipes are distinguished based on their sizes the smaller sized ones are used for the drainage of rainwater and the larger ones are usually used to the water supply works. Unreinforced pipes of small diameters, as well as reinforced and prestressed concrete pipes of large diameters, are used for water supply and other works.
